Our History
Colla Voce
gave its
first performance on September 10, 2002, in commemoration of
the first anniversary of September 11.
The 28-voice choral ensemble was drawn from members
of churches in the
Birmingham
area. The
program featured selections from sacred choral repertoire
focusing on the themes of the celebration of life, God's
faithfulness, and a remembrance of the lost.
The group takes its
name from the Italian musical term
colla voce,
literally translated as "with the voice", and uses it as an
acknowledgement of the divine Source of the gifts of music
and singing.
Colla Voce
reorganized and incorporated in 2005 after members of the
original group expressed interest in giving regular
concerts. The
newly re-formed
Colla Voce began its first three-concert season in
the Fall of 2005 with a program entitled
A Musical Chrismon,
celebrating the symbols of Christmas.
Each season since has featured theme-centered
programs, each including hymn singing and music celebrating
the goodness and grace of God.
The ensemble's repertoire has featured
works from many eras of church music.
Some favorites have been the
Requiem
settings of Faure and Durufle, the
Festival Te Deum
of Benjamin Britten, and motets by Byrd and Palestrina.
Programs have centered around the words and
biographical themes of King David, American and French
composers, and aspects of God's character and His
relationship with us.
Since 2005,
Colla Voce
has been blessed to receive the support of many churches and
individuals through their offerings of rehearsal space,
music, prayer, and financial support.
The group is always looking for gifted people with
the desire to contribute by singing, helping organize
special projects, praying
for us, and supporting us financially.
